Respite Provider’s/Mentor's Position

SPN is now hiring!

5-20 hours a week

A Respite Provider serves families who care for Exceptional Needs children. Respite can be described as rest, relief, a short break, or time away from the demands and responsibilities of care giving. Exceptional Needs Children are children with emotional disturbance (ED) and/or neurobiological disorders (NBD).
These Children are no less demanding than the developmentally disabled or physically handicapped child is. These families have had to rely on relatives and friends as informal networks of relief and also have in some cases needed to pay for professional help to obtain relief. Unfortunately very few families have an extended support system and most families do not have the resources to pay for professional assistance. Respite tries to supplement whatever arrangements a caregiver already has in place.

The Respite Provider must meet the following Criteria:

    • Must be 21 years of age.
    • Must be able to provide proof of identity and legal eligibility to work
    • Must have a reliable vehicle, a valid drivers license, and proof of insurance.
    • Must pass a background check, which includes, but is not limited to a Department of Justice fingerprint check, and child abuse profile.
    • Must be able to verbally communicate clearly and fill out forms legibly and accurately.
    • Must pass the Employee Physical and TB test.

Below are some of the duties that are required of Respite Providers:

Care giving

Administration of medication

Activity planning

Daily professional documentation

Role modeling

Work in a team approach

The emotional, physical and spiritual demands placed upon a family with a NBD/ED child are very great. The Solano Parent Network (SPN), a program of ALDEA, Inc. offers three types of Respite to families who have a child/children with an emotional and/or behavioral problem and is at risk of out of home placement. SPN Respite Providers (RP) receive specific training to care for these children, in addition to basic training, such as First Aid and CPR. The different types of care are:

Respite in the family’s home

Community Respite

Group Respite
